PurposeHindi Mental State Examination (HMSE) — administration and scoring reference.

Administration

Use the original Hindi adaptation and its culturally adapted tasks. Record literacy, language and educational context.

Scoring method

Culturally adapted cognitive-task scoring; exact original Hindi edition required.

Interpretation & limitations

  • Interpret performance in the context of the population in which the adaptation was developed.
  • Interpret the findings alongside the clinical interview, functioning, history and relevant physical assessment.
  • A word-for-word Hindi translation of MMSE is not HMSE. Do not substitute original MMSE tasks or assume identical thresholds.
  • Use the original instrument and manual for item wording, rating anchors, missing-data rules and any normative conversions. This reference does not establish a diagnosis or select treatment.
