PurposeMini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) — administration and scoring reference.

Administration

Administer the licensed MMSE with the authorized tasks and exact scoring instructions. Record language, education, sensory barriers and relevant assistance.

Scoring method

Sum the task-specific points on the completed standard form: maximum 30. Do not infer a total from an incomplete or materially modified administration.

Interpretation & limitations

  • The 0–30 score describes performance on this brief cognitive examination. Interpret it with baseline functioning and the medical assessment.
  • Interpret the findings alongside the clinical interview, functioning, history and relevant physical assessment.
  • No universal dementia cutoff is applied. The original MMSE, MMSE-2 and adapted language forms are distinct.
  • Use the original instrument and manual for item wording, rating anchors, missing-data rules and any normative conversions. This reference does not establish a diagnosis or select treatment.
